Approximate Driving times in and around Nelson region
You have two options. Both options take similar amounts of time.
This is a stunning route that hugs the coastline of the beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound and goes around the head of Kenepuru Sound. It is tarmac all the way but narrow and windy. From the Picton Ferry terminal take State Highway 1 to Blenheim/Christchurch. Turn the first right into Queen Charlotte Drive to Havelock/Nelson. At the end of Queen Charlotte Drive turn right onto State Highway 6. You then go through the mussel capital of New Zealand - Havelock. If you like mussels The Mussel Boys Restaurant is the place to stop. About 20km after Havelock you will come to Pelorus Bridge. This lovely forested area is well worth a stop if you have the time. There is also a café here which is open all year round for lunch and snacks. After leaving Pelorus Bridge continue on towards Nelson. As you get nearer Nelson you will see the sea. The sea will be on your right and houses on your left. Continue on until you come to a roundabout. At this roundabout you turn left following the signs to City Centre. Turn the first left into Wainui Street. Then the next right into Collingwood Street. Then the first left into Cambria Street. Cambria House is the third house on the left-hand side - No 7. Please feel free to park off the road in front of the house.

You turn right at this sign onto Rapaura Road. At the end of Rapaura Road turn right onto State Highway 6 and follow the signs to Nelson. After about 30km you will come to the mussel capital of New Zealand - Havelock. If you like mussels The Mussel Boys Restaurant is the place to stop. Come out of Blenheim on State Highway 63 which heads southwest to Murchison. At Renwick (a small town about 10 km out of Blenheim) take the sweeping right hand road that is State Highway 6 and follow this to Nelson. Head out of the airport. Drive through five roundabouts following signs to the City Centre at each roundabout. Following this route you now drive over the hill and down into central Nelson. You are now on Rutherford Street. Go straight through three sets of traffic lights and then when you come to the fourth set turn right into Halifax Street (you will see the Big Fresh supermarket ahead of you and on your left as you turn into Halifax Street). Continue down Halifax Street and go through one set of traffic lights and then at the second set turn left into Collingwood Street. Go over the bridge, go straight ahead at the STOP sign and then turn the next right into Cambria Street. Cambria House is the third house on the left hand side - No 7. From Motueka head towards Richmond and Nelson on State Highway 60. Once at Richmond, follow the signs to Nelson. You then come onto the motorway called Whakatu Drive. About 10km on you'll come to a roundabout and you need to follow the sign to Tahunanui and City Centre. Proceed through 2 more roundabouts following the signs to City Centre. Following this route you now drive over the hill and down into central Nelson. You are now on Rutherford Street.
